A European that could have been different
The second and last round of the CIK-FIA European Championship for the categories KF2 and KF3 raced on the PF International Kart Circuit in Brandon (England). 5 Chiesa Corse drivers present at the go.
Callum Ilott – KF3 – A block at his best
As soon as he arrives in Brandon he proves he is one of the fastest, as always: 1st in three heats, with three best laps in the other races. In Race 1 he starts 3rd and, after a few bends, is already in the lead. Then something blocks him and he gets lost in contacts that force him to tough rebounds (13th). In Race 2 he climbs to 5th, but then Kodric shuffles up the cards and he ends up 12th, despite scoring second best lap in both races.
Lance Stroll – KF3 – On the rebound, but not enough
Good heats, though he « pays » for an accident with a 21st place and so is 28th at the go of Race 1. Not a big deal, because he’s in the mood for recoveries: yet, when he is 9th, a few laps from the end, in the enth attempted pass, he touches with a rival and damages his wheel. He starts from the rear in Race 2, but can’t repeat the magic act and closes 22nd.
Dan Ticktum – KF3 – Contacts cost him the finals
He closes the first two heats 5th and 7th, then runs into problems with several contacts that send him to the mat, increasing his penalties count and keeping him from qualifying for the finals. He wants to prove his valor anyways and in Final B closes 3rd. Although he doesn’t collect points in this match, he is in the top 10 in the general standings.
Thiago Vivacqua – KF2 – He qualifies for the finals and…
Although a contact pushes him into a one-eighty and risks compromising the excellent work done until then in the heats (6th, 7th and 8th), he manages to qualify in 23rd place. Excellent result, considering there are 84 drivers on track. Then two contacts force him to 26th in Race 1 and to leave the field in Race 2. Too bad, but he’s growing.
Nikita Mazepin – KF3 – In the finals no high notes
Constant enough in the heats, he qualifies for the finals in 32nd place. In Race 1 he does a nice recovery from the rear of the grid and closes 20th. Or, so he thinks: because a 10 second penalty forces him again to the rear for the start of Race 2. Here he fights, but doesn’t get beyond the 30th spot.
